Mozambican President Daniel Chapo met with Tom Hickey, Executive Director of Irish mining company Kenmare Resources, in Maputo recently. During the meeting, Hickey reaffirmed the company’s commitment to continued investment in Mozambique over the coming decades. Kenmare operates one of the world’s largest mineral sands mines in the coastal district of Larde, Nampula Province, where it produces ilmenite, rutile and zircon.
Speaking to STV, Hickey highlighted the significant economic, social and fiscal contributions of the company’s operations, expressing confidence in Mozambique’s business climate.“Our meeting with Chapo was a chance to strengthen the relationship between Kenmare and the Mozambican government. We expect to continue employing over 1,700 people and generating substantial revenue for the government through taxes and royalties,” said Hickey.
Hickey commended Chapo’s development vision and his recognition of the private sector’s role in national progress. Hickey concluded,“He has a clear understanding of how companies like Kenmare can contribute meaningfully to the nation, and we truly value that. Mozambique has been good to Kenmare. We hope it remains a place where we can grow and continue creating value for the country in the years ahead.”
