A recent violent confrontation at the Montepuez Ruby Mining (MRM) concession in Cabo Delgado province has underscored the escalating dangers posed by illegal mining operations. The incident, which resulted in an illegal miner being shot and wounded, has prompted MRM to issue a stark warning about the escalating risks associated with this illicit activity.
On March 18th, a large group of illegal miners encroached upon MRM’s concession in Namanhumbir. According to the company, the miners acted in a hostile manner towards a patrol from the Mozambique Armed Defence Forces (FADM), leading to the use of force and the wounding of one individual. The injured man, a 29-year-old from Nampula province, received immediate medical attention at the MRM clinic before being transferred to Montepuez District Hospital for further treatment.
This incident has brought into sharp focus the precarious situation faced by both mining companies and the authorities in Cabo Delgado. MRM, which holds a concession of approximately 33,600 hectares, has been actively engaged in awareness campaigns within neighboring communities, which often provide temporary shelter for illegal miners. MRM has reported the incident to district, provincial, and national authorities, urging them to take decisive action against those who finance, facilitate, or encourage the illegal ruby trade.
