Lourenço Lindonde, the Secretary of State for the central Mozambican province of Manica, has issued a direct challenge to Armando Canheze, the newly appointed administrator of Vanduzi district. The primary focus of this mandate is the restoration of order within the “Seis Carros” (Six Cars) gold mining region.
This area has surged in prominence as a major hub for artisanal mining, drawing an estimated population of over ten thousand people, including both Mozambican nationals and foreigners. However, this rapid influx has led to the emergence of a significant parallel economy and unregulated commercial activities that currently operate outside the jurisdiction of provincial authorities.
The urgency of the situation is underscored by the recurring safety hazards associated with informal mining practices. Lindonde highlighted the tragic loss of life resulting from frequent landslides in the region, stressing that the immediate priority for the new administrator must be the reorganisation of the district to prevent further fatalities.
By enforcing basic safety regulations and ensuring that mining activities are conducted sustainably, the government aims to formalise the sector and secure stable export channels that do not come at the cost of human lives.
Beyond the mining sector, the Secretary of State has tasked Canheze with revitalising the district’s agricultural and livestock potential. Vanduzi is viewed as a vital asset for Manica due to its vast tracts of arable land and favourable conditions for large-scale production.
The provincial government intends for the district to become a benchmark in poultry, cattle, and pig farming, thereby strengthening the economic balance of both the province and Mozambique at large. Lindonde expressed confidence that Canheze’s professional background having previously served as the provincial commander of the Mozambican Police (PRM) will provide the necessary leadership to achieve these developmental goals.
