A landmark deal has been struck, solidifying Mozambique’s position in the global electric vehicle (EV) supply chain. Graphite extracted from the Balama mine, operated by Australian mining giant Syrah Resources, will power the batteries of luxury electric car manufacturer Lucid Motors from 2026.

This three-year agreement, announced by Syrah, involves the supply of 7,000 tonnes of natural graphite active anode material (AMM) from its Vidalia factory in the United States. The Vidalia facility, in turn, relies on graphite sourced directly from the Balama mine in northern Mozambique.

Lucid Motors, a Silicon Valley-based technology company, is renowned for its cutting-edge electric vehicles, including the Lucid Air and the upcoming Lucid Gravity SUV. The company’s state-of-the-art manufacturing plant in Arizona will utilize batteries containing the Mozambican graphite.

Syrah Resources emphasized the strategic importance of its vertically integrated supply chain, highlighting the Balama-Vidalia connection as a “unique value proposition” for governments and battery manufacturers. In a market where securing reliable sources of critical minerals is paramount, Vidalia stands out as a key supplier of natural graphite and AMM for the North American EV battery market.

The Balama mine, located in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province, is poised to become a vital link in the global EV revolution. However, the mine’s operations have faced recent challenges, including disruptions due to local protests. Syrah Resources is working with the International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), which recently provided a $53 million loan for the mine’s expansion, to address these issues.

“The disruption of operations at Balama is being monitored by all parties,” Syrah stated, affirming its commitment to collaborative efforts with the DFC and the U.S. Department of Energy.

Despite these challenges, the long-term prospects for Mozambique’s graphite industry remain bright. The country is projected to significantly increase its graphite production in the coming years, with government forecasts predicting over 329,040 tonnes in 2024. This surge in production reflects the growing demand for graphite, a crucial component in EV batteries.

The agreement with Lucid Motors marks a significant milestone for Mozambique, showcasing its potential to contribute to the global transition to sustainable transportation. As the world increasingly embraces electric vehicles, Mozambique’s graphite reserves are poised to play a pivotal role in powering the future of mobility.
