Montepuez Ruby Mining (MRM), a major player in Mozambique’s ruby industry, has reported a significant security breach at its Maningue Nice mine. On November 15th, a group of approximately 150 illegal miners stormed the site, taking a police officer and a private security guard hostage.

The incident was allegedly orchestrated by Airos Samuel Tolecha, a known figure in the region with a history of involvement in illegal mining activities. Tolecha, who had recently escaped police custody, reportedly paid participants a small fee to join the raid and offered additional incentives for those who returned with stolen gemstones.

MRM has expressed concerns about the increasing frequency of such attacks and the potential for violence. The company has called on authorities to take stronger measures to combat illegal mining, which not only undermines the industry but also poses a serious threat to the safety of workers and local communities.

The incident highlights the challenges faced by mining companies operating in regions with significant mineral resources. Illegal mining, often fueled by poverty and unemployment, can lead to environmental degradation, social unrest, and significant revenue losses for the government.

MRM is actively working with local communities to raise awareness about the dangers of illegal mining and the importance of sustainable mining practices. By fostering strong relationships with communities and supporting local development initiatives, the company aims to create a more stable and secure operating environment.
