MAPUTO — Mozambique launched a broad investment initiative aimed at expanding domestic mineral processing and utilizing its natural gas reserves to anchor local industrial growth, signaling a fresh effort by the East African nation to retain more value from its resource wealth.

Speaking at the launch of the Conference on Value Addition Based on Available Mineral and Energy Resources (CAVAME-d), Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy Estêvão Pale outlined plans to present targeted investment packages to domestic and international operators. The event is scheduled to take place Oct. 19–24 in the northern port city of Nacala, Nampula province.

“We will present project packages based on available minerals for local processing, driving industrialisation, innovation, employment and prosperity,” Pale said.

The strategic push comes as Mozambique works through the regulatory rollout of a updated legal framework for its resource sector, designed to boost investment clarity, market competitiveness, and supply-chain transparency. The conference will bring together government officials, project developers, financiers, and academic institutions to channel raw resource potential into localized industrial developments.

Beyond mineral beneficiation, the government plans to pitch domestic natural gas projects to seed downstream industries including petrochemicals, fertilizers, synthetic fuels, and regional power generation. The initiative will also target supporting infrastructure, targeting investments in logistics networks and specialized aviation services dedicated to the offshore hydrocarbons industry.

As part of the October gathering, the government will host the Nacala Gem Fair (FAGENA), featuring Mozambique’s inaugural international gemstone auction. The sale aims to connect domestic gemstone producers with global buyers and investors, establishing formalized, local value addition for precious stones prior to export.
