Maputo, Mozambique – Mozambique is set to become a key player in the global electric vehicle revolution as Indonesian businesses express keen interest in investing in the country’s mineral resources for battery production.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, the Mozambican Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Carlos Zacarias, revealed that both countries are exploring potential partnerships to harness Mozambique’s graphite reserves for battery manufacturing. “Given the enormous potential for graphite that Mozambique has, this mineral is already being exported for batteries used in electric vehicles,” he stated.
The Indonesian-Africa Forum, held recently on the Indonesian island of Bali, provided a platform for the two nations to discuss potential collaborations in the mining sector. Zacarias highlighted the significant interest from Indonesian companies in establishing battery production facilities in Mozambique. “The partnership between the two countries in battery production will represent a great achievement in bilateral cooperation in the mining area,” he emphasized.
Beyond batteries, the minister also revealed that both countries are keen to explore cooperation in the pharmaceutical and industrial sectors. Indonesia’s advanced industrial capabilities offer significant opportunities for Mozambique, while the country’s growing pharmaceutical industry presents potential synergies.
To facilitate these collaborations, technical teams from both countries are scheduled to meet in the near future to finalize the terms of the agreements that will underpin bilateral cooperation in various sectors.
As Mozambique positions itself as a strategic partner in the global electric vehicle supply chain, the country’s mineral resources are poised to play a pivotal role in driving economic growth and sustainable development.
